This song is about the survivors guilt I experienced in the wake of losing a lot of beautiful souls this past year and also, more generally, it speaks on death (being the cat that us mice are running away from) and extending that metaphor to taking a shot of alcohol and then a chaser to chase away your demons and run away from your problems and then finally how the very thing that you felt was freeing you and helped you run away from your problems becomes what holds you back (the leash) when you try to run away and be free.

I poured a little for you on the sidewalk at the bar, I don't know what good it'll do but it helped to warm my heart. Because when you never get to say goodbye you end up talking to yourself at night with the hope that maybe your prayers just might reach someone on the other side.

I don't deserve to take your place I've got no dog in this race. I end up stuffing my face when I say I want a taste but you know me I'm looking for peace but I keep getting choked by my leash when I'm running away.
